It was a tale of missed opportunities for India at the Olympic Games as star marksman Abhinav Bindra narrowly missed a medal and the men’s hockey team slumped to a 1-2 defeat to Germany by conceding a goal with three seconds left in the match on the third day of competitions today.

There were setbacks in other events too as the trap shooting duo of Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai could not improve on their opening day performance and failed to qualify for the Olympics men’s trap semifinals, signing off at 16th and 19th respectively on the second and final day of qualification.

Woman archer Laxmirani Majhi also put up a below-par performance in the individual elimination round one and bowed out without a fight against Alexandra Longova of Slovakia.

TOULOUSE (France): Gareth Bale struck his third goal in as many Euro 2016 games as brilliant Wales cruised into the last 16 as winners of Group B with a clinical 3-0 dismantling of Russia on Monday.

First-half strikes by Aaron Ramsey and Neil Taylor sent Chris Coleman's men well on their way to a comprehensive win in Toulouse against an overwhelmed Russian side.

But Bale was a constant threat all night and grabbed his third goal of the tournament when he cleverly dinked the ball past Igor Akinfeev with the outside of his right boot midway through the second half as Russia were eliminated.

The last players to score in all three group games at a European Championship were Milan Baros for the Czech Republic and Ruud van Nistelrooy for the Netherlands, both in 2004.

India's hopes of qualifying for the title clash hung in balance as they succumbed 2-4 to world champions Australia in their last league outing of the 36th Hero Champions Trophy Hockey here today.
India's two goals came from penalty corner shooter VR Raghunath and striker Mandeep Singh, but it was too late to cause any threat to Australia, who had gained a stranglehold through strikes from Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski, Flynn Ogilvie and Tristian White.
Australia topped the league standings with 13 points from five matches, while India finished on seven points and now await the result of the Great Britain-Belgium encounter to know if they will feature in the final or the bronze medal match tomorrow.

MIRPUR (Dhaka): The relief of avoiding 'Banglawash' was writ large on the faces of Indian players after they posted a 77-run victory over Bangladesh in the third and final ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday. The hosts won the series 2-1.
The fact that Suresh Raina was once again the best bowler on the night summed up India's effort with the ball. Bangladesh batsmen's bold attempt to overhaul India's substantial tally of 317/6 ended at 240 in 47 overs.

Needing over six runs an over to complete a Banglawash, the hosts were off to a brisk start despite losing opener Tamim Iqbal cheaply. The free-stroking Soumya Sarkar hit five boundaries and two sixes in a quickfire 40 off 34 balls before becoming Dhawal Kulkarni's second victim.

With Umesh Yadav - returning in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar - bowling like a novice and Stuart Binny (a surprise choice to replace Jadeja) and R Ashwin also failing to make any impression in his first spells, Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim brought up the 100 of the innings in 15.1 overs.

It is common knowledge that Ravichandran Ashwin is captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 'go-to man' whenever the team is under pressure. By filling in for Dhoni at the match-eve news conference here on Tuesday, the lanky off-spinner showed that he retains the unofficial portfolio off the field, too.

And like his captain often does when in mood, Ashwin did some very straight talking. Discussing Sunday's six-wicket loss, Ashwin admitted that Indian players' body language had not been positive.
"I think we should be honest in admitting the fact that we haven't played very flamboyant cricket and not come out of our shell. But as a whole, the dressing room atmosphere hasn't been anything short of what it has been in the past," Ashwin summed it up nicely.

Pointing out that India have no option but to go for a win in the last ODI, Ashwin said: "Yes we've lost the series but we'd like to turn things around. At this point of time, we are trying to come back in a lost series. We can't throw in the towel or run away from the fact that there is a game to go. We will try to win it."

After being comprehensively thrashed by 79 runs in the opening match of the three-match series, India for the first time are staring at the ignominy of series defeat against the proverbial minnows of world cricket in the backdrop of some unwanted controversy that resulted in skipper Dhoni being docked 75 percent of his match fees.

The road to redemption for Indian cricketers might just be a bit more tougher than what is expected as multiple factors stand in their way of clawing back to keep the series alive by restoring parity.

The first and foremost is Bangladesh's performance of late. If anyone thought that making it to the last eight of the ICC Cricket World Cup was a fluke, they were proved completely wrong by Mashrafe Mortaza and his bunch of talented youngsters as they whipped Pakistan 3-0 at home.

The 'Tigers' once again roared as they crushed a full- strength India side fair and square in what was a lop-sided contest for the better part of the match.

The second factor which is also equally significant is skipper Dhoni --- his form has not been great for quite some time and now the tag of 'Captain Cool' has taken a dent in the recent times.

MUMBAI: Three of India's most accomplished former cricketers - with a little over 60,000 international runs among them - were invited by the BCCI on Monday to form part of a new cricket advisory committee with immediate effect.
Sachin Tendulkar, globally respected as the world's best batsman; Sourav Ganguly, an astute skipper who taught India how to win overseas and VVS Laxman, the elegant right-hander who gave the mighty Australians a decade long nightmare, have accepted the board's invitation to be part of the committee.
Their focus, once they're formally brought on board, will be to advise the BCCI on the various progressive steps needed to take Indian cricket forward. The trio will first meet president Jagmohan Dalmiya and secretary Anurag Thakur in Kolkata before the Indian team departs for Bangladesh, PTI reported.
A statement issued by the board, which didn't go into the specifics of their roles, said that the "areas of immediate focus will be to provide guidance to our national team as we set out to enhance our performance in overseas engagements, provide direction to improve our talent pathway and take steps to strengthen domestic cricket to better prepare our players to handle the rigours of international cricket".

Smith and Clarke came to the party with match-winning fifties. In yet another display of world-beating tenacity, Australia rode on fifties by captain Michael Clarke — his final ODI — and Steve Smith — who continued with his relentless run of form — to defeat New Zealand by 7 wickets in the World Cup 2015 final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

As Smith pulled the winning boundary to crush a New Zealand fairytale and clinch a fifth World Cup for Australia on Sunday, Clarke's side celebrated a glorious end to a journey marked by a period of self-doubt and grief for a fallen teammate.

Captain Clarke retires from one-day cricket with his legacy intact but his team will charge on to the 2019 tournament with renewed belief in their ability to re-generate, adapt and rebound from the stiffest of challenges.

Two years after their annus horribilis of 2013 and less than three months after the death of batsman Phillip Hughes, Australia resumed their dominion of world cricket with a ruthless seven-wicket victory at the MCG.

Brutal in the ultimate backyard battle against the 'little brother' from across the 'ditch', Australia's fifth world trophy may be regarded the sweetest, having played out in front of a record home crowd of 93,013.

Australia have won four of the last five World Cups, an astonishing record of dominance unlikely to ever be repeated.

Roared on by canary-yellow fans in the terraces, Mitchell Starc bowled New Zealand's totemic captain Brendon McCullum for a third-ball duck, setting the tone for a banner day for the hosts' pacemen who skittled the visitors for 183.

In an engrossing semifinal clash, four—time champions Australia rode on Steve Smith’s classy 105 to post an imposing 328/7 before bundling out India for 233 in 46.5 overs to set up a summit clash with trans—Tasmanian rivals and co—hosts New Zealand in Melbourne on Sunday.

After a dream run which saw them win seven matches on the trot, India’s quest for a second successive World Cup title was finally thwarted by the formidable Australians, who outplayed Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s bravehearts in every department at the fully-packed Sydney Cricket Ground.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (65, 65 balls) stood tall amid a disappointing batting show as he waged a lone battle to take India past the 200-run mark and make a match of it despite the steep asking rate. At the top, Shikhar Dhawan was another notable performer with 45-run knock.

The Indians had themselves to blame for the loss as the bowling unit, which had performed admirably till now, failed to deliver when it mattered the most while the batting also crumbled under pressure.

The jubilant Aussies broke into wild celebrations after Mitchell Starc castled Umesh Yadav (0) to dismiss the last Indian batsman in the 47th over. Home captain Michael Clarke was composed though as he shook hands with the Indians and acknowledged the Aussie supporters, who had interestingly been outnumbered by Indian fans today.

Set a record run chase, the first 300-plus score in a World Cup semifinal, the Indians started off with a flourish with Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (34, 48 balls) adding 76 runs for the first wicket in 12.5 overs.

But Dhawan’s dismissal proved crucial as the runs dried up in the face of a determined effort by a fired up Australian pace battery.

Australia and India have won six of the last eight Cricket World Cup titles. When the teams meet in the World Cup semifinal on Thursday at the Sydney Cricket Ground, there’s bound to be some friction. Both captains have attacking mindsets in the 50-over format, and the top order of both batting line-ups are stacked with free-hitting players, so there’s also bound to be some entertaining and enterprising cricket.

The winner will advance to Sunday’s final against New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Defending champions India on Friday survived a scare before defeating a spirited West Indies by four wickets in a group league encounter to romp into the quarterfinals of the ICC Cricket World Cup here with four wins on the trot.

Chasing a modest target of 183, India’s top-order struggled due to poor shot selection before skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s composed unbeaten innings of 45 helped them reach the target in 39.1 overs and ensure their fourth consecutive win in the tournament.

However, it wasn’t as commanding as the previous three wins as the batting was scrappy, the fielding shoddy with as many as four catches being dropped and the bowling lacking discipline at times with 16 wides during the West Indies innings.

By virtue of this victory, India stretched their winning run at the global event to eight matches stretching from 2011 edition’s group league match against West Indies in Chennai.

The eight wins thus equals the record of Sourav Ganguly-led team’s effort during the 2003 edition in South Africa.

Dhoni, who had a poor run of form in recent times played an innings of substance that had three boundaries and a six off 56 deliveries. David Warner and Glenn Maxwell struck blistering centuries as Australia flexed their batting muscles to expose defending champion India's bowling limitations in a World Cup warmup match in Adelaide on Sunday.

Opting to bat first, Australia piled up 371 in 48.2 overs and bowled out India for 265 in a dominant display to explain why they are considered favourites for the World Cup beginning on Saturday.

They dominated India in all three departments even though the tournament co-hosts did not last a full 50 overs in what was possibly the only blemish in their 106-run win.

Left-handed Warner (104) played his natural game, racing to his century in 80 balls.

Maxwell (122) did even better, needing 53 balls to reach the 100-mark, his second 50 coming in just 19 balls.

There was momentary discomfort for Maxwell, whose attempted hook off Umesh Yadav resulted in an inside edge that crashed onto his helmet and he also needed medical attention on his lower back after reaching 50.

Maxwell retired to allow his team mates to get some batting practice but not before plundering 27 runs from a Yadav over and hitting three sixes in a row.

India, having lost paceman Ishant Sharma to a knee injury earlier in the day, had a scare when Mohammad Shami (3-83) left the field with a split webbing but returned soon after to resume bowling.

Their batting on a good track could not offer much relief, however, with only Shikhar Dhawan (59), Ajinkya Rahane (66) and Ambati Rayudu (53) managing to impress.

Thakur and Ibrahim Kalifulla, told Senior counsel Aryama Sundaram, appearing for the BCCI: “Let there be a fresh blood in the BCCI and let the new body decide on what action to be taken on the basis of Justice Mukul Mudgal committee’s report.”

The bench was responding to Mr. Sundaram’s submissions that the disciplinary committee of the Board would take whatever action that was necessary, pursuant to the Mudgal panel’s report.

Earlier, senior counsel Nalini Chidambaram, appearing for the Cricket Association of Bihar submitted that Mr. Srinivasan was as guilty of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan as per the BCCI Rules and the Anti Corruption Code for IPL. She said Mr. Srinivasan should be prevented from contesting the elections and his franchise Chennai Super Kings should be suspended. She said the findings of the Mudgal panel should be taken to its logical conclusion.

At this juncture, Justice Thakur asked Mr. Sundaram as to what action could be taken on the basis of the Mudgal report. When counsel replied that the punishment varied from suspension, termination, expulsion, reprimand and fine, Justice Thakur wondered whether the same persons in the Board, which was now on an extended tenure could be asked to take action.
