Actor shares dais with two top doctors who survived cancer

Thiruvananthapuram (news.kvartha.com 07.02.2020): “I think my love for life has increased one hundred times more because this life was almost taken away from me and given back to me,” said leading cine actor Mamta Mohandas, looking back to her experience of winning the battle against cancer.

Mamta was narrating her experience in pulling through cancer with two medical doctors of long years’ experience of treating cancer and both cancer survivors themselves---Dr N Sreedevi Amma and Dr P Kusuma Kumari, former additional director and deputy director respectively of Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here.

They came down to share their experience and perspectives of cancer on Friday at a special session on the concluding day of the 39th annual conference of Indian Association for Cancer Research (IACR), hosted by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB).

All of them had a message for the society. With tremendous advancements in treatment, cancer is no longer an unconquerable monster as it used to be taken in the past.

Mamta, who was diagnosed with cancer when she was in her 20s when she was in the midst of a highly promising career in cinema 11 years back, said she often used to think about the people who had lost their lives before all the new treatment methods that proved cancer completely curable were developed.

“I think about the people who have lost their lives fighting cancer. Cancer is not something that we fight. Any form of cancer is curable. Also, I thank people who have come forward to show their bravery”, Mamta, who has essayed many memorable roles in films, said.

She said she feels that her life is now more meaningful and better. “Each time I got it back it was even better. It is a bigger and better life. My love for life is just oozing,” she said.

Summing up her outlook towards life on a positive note Mamta said “We don’t have to wait for something like cancer to happen to start enjoying life. Do it now. Do it today”

One of the senior most pathologists in Kerala, Dr Sreedevi Amma said she is a ‘living example’ to prove that cancer is completely curable, if it is detected early and proper treatment is provided.

Uterine cervical cancer and breast cancer are two most prevalent types in India, both of which are curable. However, in many cases early symptoms are neglected and it would be in advanced stage that the patient reaches doctor. “If I neglected (early symptoms) and waited, I would not have been here with you today,” Dr Sreedevi Amma said.

Dr Kusumakumari, a leading paediatric oncologist, noted that the things have improved a lot when it comes to treating children with cancer from those days when resources and technology were limited in a premier cancer institution like RCC.

She, however, said in paediatric oncology challenges will keep coming up. “The money required to treat children with cancer are very high. But we can not ignore the reality that children do develop cancer,” she said.

Going down the memory lane, she said the pressure of the work was so hard on those days and at a point of time she was on verge of leaving the job.

The session was moderated by Prof Maqsood Siddiqi. Prof M Radhakrishna Pillai, Director RGCB, said listening to the experiences of people who had gone through cancer and fought and comeback is also a facet of cancer treatment.

RGCB-hosted three-day Cancer Research Association annual meet begins

Thiruvananthapuram (news.kvartha.com 05.02.2020): Noting that the incidence of cancer is expected to double by 2040, a top World Health Organization (WHO) official today emphasized the need to promote a healthy lifestyle and early intervention to avoid society being overwhelmed by non-communicable diseases.

“We need education and awareness among the population across the world to counter disease causing trends like unhealthy diet, red meat consumption, decrease in physical activity, tobacco use and obesity etc. In India, shifting from traditional diet to western diet is one of the major reasons for cancer,” said Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Executive Director and Chief Scientist, WHO.

She was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day 39th annual conference of Indian Association for Cancer Research (IACR) at Uday Samudra Hotel Kovalam here, through a video message. Priya Srinivas, Secretary, IACR, was also present.

“India has potentials like infrastructure as well as human resources to take advantage of the opportunity to tackle the situation. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer are very threatening to overwhelm our systems and cause unsustainable costs to countries around the world,” Dr Soumya said.

“In India, NCDs are emerging as a major public health problem and in fact today account for about 60 per cent of the disease both in terms of death and disability. The NCDs are the largest and related to lifestyle, to social environmental determinants of health as well as individual behaviours. Sometimes, there require specialized facilities, infrastructure and human resources for diagnosis advice for management,” she suggested.

“In many states in India, NCDs have been relatively neglected over the last few years, and also competing for resources. They are also vying with communicable diseases and maternal and child health. So, we have to think about how to integrate many of these disease control programmes in providing comprehensive family healthcare,” the WHO official said.

“Major risk factors for NCDs are tobacco, unhealthy diets, inadequate physical activity, alcohol consumption and, very importantly, air pollution. The good news is that this understanding offers prospects of integrated timely prevention strategies. Cancer prevention is considered part of the national NCD strategy,” she said.

“In India, cancer is among the top causes of death and also among the main sources of catastrophic expenditure of the patients and families. We have seen over the last 15 years, both cancer incidence and mortalities has been increasing. What is disheartening to see that the mortality rates of the most common curable cancers stay exceed 50 per cent,” Dr Soumya observed. “These poor outcomes are largely related to late-stage presentation of patients.”

“The problems of completely preventable cancer such cervical and oval cancers also remain acceptably high. The other major preventable cancer is tobacco-related cancer. About 35-50 per cent tobacco-related death occurs in men while for women, it is 15-20 per cent,” she added.

The WHO official also called for a standardized cancer registry in the country to facilitate studies as death registration. She also noted that it would be a game change if Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology can be used in cancer treatment.

Dr Soumya also exuded confidence that India can lead in finding solutions in this field for low and middle income countries.

In his welcome address, ProfRadhakrishna Pillaisaid it’s a perfect time for to hold the meetas WHO and IACR have just released the World Cancer Report. “The report focuses specifically on cancer prevention and RGCB has also featured in it.”

In his keynote address, Prof. Partha P Majumdar, Distinguished Professor and former director, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, West Bengal, said only 10 percent of cancers are familial and rest of them are non-familial.

Dr Frederic Biemar, Director, International Affairs, American Association for Cancer Research, called for increased, sustained government funding for cancer research and cancer-related sciences.

Dr David A Wink Jr., National Cancer Institute, NIH, US, also spoke at a session.

Leading cancer researchers, clinicians, scientists and IPR experts from India and abroad are attending the meet, whose central theme is “Leading the fight against cancer.”

Zurich – January 16, 2017: Infosys (NYSE: INFY), a global leader in consulting, technology, outsourcing and next-generation services, today announced its internal carbon price at $10.5 per ton of CO2e, at an event organized by the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) in Zurich. A significant milestone for Infosys, the price will be applicable for a period of two years and will represent the cost of decarbonizing 1 ton of CO2e.

Infosys has been working towards building a clean energy future and has been on track to meet its commitment of becoming carbon neutral in 2018. The company has implemented a three-pronged strategy to go carbon neutral: energy efficiency, renewable power, and emission offsets. In addition, Infosys has also committed to reduce its per-capita electricity consumption by 50% from the 2008 level and use 100% renewable power for electricity by 2018.

Infosys derived its internal carbon price based on its program to completely decarbonize under the carbon neutral commitment. The carbon price announced today is a weighted average of the prices of carbon under the energy efficiency, renewable energy, and emission offset levers. The price of carbon under each lever was estimated based on the company’s past and ongoing investments in the area.

Speaking at the event, Sandeep Dadlani, President and Head – Americas, Infosys said, “We recognize that global warming is the biggest threat the world is facing today. We understand the significance of the 20C global warming limit under the Paris Agreement. For Infosys, by putting a price on carbon, we have further cemented our commitment to become carbon neutral. As a responsible company, we are very proud to be one among a handful of companies in the world to announce an internal carbon price. We hope that it becomes a global movement and helps save the planet by keeping global warming under 20C.”

Putting a price on carbon is akin to the concept of ‘polluter pays’. Infosys now has the option of using the internal carbon price as a basis to internally raise funds from businesses or departments and use the funds for corporate emission reduction programs. The internal carbon pricing exercise itself gave us deeper insights into the various pathways to reduce emissions and their relative merits and effectiveness.

CPLC, launched during the COP21 in Paris, is working with corporates and governments to advance the concept of carbon pricing. The Paris Agreement reached at the COP21 commits to limit global warming to well below 20C. That calls for an unprecedented and drastic cut in global greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning into a low carbon economy and moving toward a carbon neutral economy by the end of the century. Experts believe that the success of such a transition lies in putting a price on carbon. Infosys joined CPLC in 2016.
The World Bank has forecast India's economic growth at 7.6 per cent rate in the current financial year, the same as was registered in 2015-16. To grow at even this rate, the economy would have to activate its stalled engines - agricultural growth and rural demand, trade and private investment - and sustain demand from urban households and public investments, The World Bank said. Growth would gradually recover to 7.7 per cent next year and 7.8 per cent in 2018-19, it said in its latest India Development Update, released on Monday.

The report is titled Financing Double-Digit Growth and it prescribed the government carry out reforms, particularly in the financial sector, to enable the economy touch 10 per cent growth or more. Amid allegations that economic growth is not creating jobs, the World Bank report said manufacturing and services sectors, which expanded 7.4 per cent and 8.9 per cent respectively in FY16, also created urban jobs. It should be mentioned that the 7.6 per cent growth forecast the economy in the current financial year is 0.2 percentage points lower than predictions made in January.

A lawmaker who campaigned for Britain to stay in the European Union was killed Thursday by a gun- and knife-wielding attacker in her small-town constituency, a tragedy that brought the country’s fierce, divisive referendum campaign to a shocked standstill.
Jo Cox, a 41-year-old Labour Party legislator who praised the contribution of immigrants to Britain and championed the cause of war-scarred Syrian refugees, was attacked outside a library in Birstall, northern England, after a regular meeting with constituents.
Police would not speculate on the attacker’s motive, but Clarke Rothwell, who runs a cafe near the scene of the slaying, told the BBC and Britain’s Press Association that the assailant shouted “Britain first!” several times. Police did not confirm that account.

India's hopes of qualifying for the title clash hung in balance as they succumbed 2-4 to world champions Australia in their last league outing of the 36th Hero Champions Trophy Hockey here today.
India's two goals came from penalty corner shooter VR Raghunath and striker Mandeep Singh, but it was too late to cause any threat to Australia, who had gained a stranglehold through strikes from Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski, Flynn Ogilvie and Tristian White.
Australia topped the league standings with 13 points from five matches, while India finished on seven points and now await the result of the Great Britain-Belgium encounter to know if they will feature in the final or the bronze medal match tomorrow.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday the burden of handling the world's crises should be better shared, as leaders and aid groups sought to defy sceptics at an unprecedented aid summit in Istanbul.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gathered over 60 heads of state and government with top NGOs at the summit, aiming to better keep conflicts from erupting and ensure legal retribution for those guilty of humanitarian crimes.

Celebrity stardust was sprinkled on the event by actors Daniel Craig and Forest Whitaker, who urged participants to seize a unique chance to make a difference for the world's worst off.

With some 60 million people displaced around the world and at least 125 million requiring assistance and protection in the biggest humanitarian crises since World War II, Ban said that the summit represented a chance to forge a "different future".

But the event has been shadowed by the boycott of medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and doubts that the two-day event can make any genuine impact.

"Let us seize this opportunity, let us make our mark as agents of change," said Ban.

He warned that realising the aims was not "an easy task" and required a "political will on a scale we have not seen in recent years."

Boris Johnson has compared the EU's aims to Hitler's, saying both involved the intention to unify Europe under a single "authority".

The pro-Brexit Tory MP said both the Nazi leader and Napoleon had failed at unification and the EU was "an attempt to do this by different methods".
Shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn, who backs Remain, said the comparison was "offensive and desperate".
Washington: Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has promised to release information about Area 51 - a Nevada Air Force base where many believe the US keeps top secret information about extraterrestrial (ET) beings - if she is elected president.
However, President Barack Obama has no plans to open up government files on the matter, Politico quoted White House press secretary Josh Earnest as saying on Wednesday.

“I have to admit that I don’t have a tab in my briefing book for Area 51,” Earnest said after he was asked whether the president wants to beat Clinton to the punch before he leaves office.

The spokesman said he is “not aware of any plans the president has to make public any information about this,” adding that he’s not sure whether Obama has reviewed any government files on extraterrestrial life forms.

Clinton made the proposal in all seriousness last month during a radio interview and has demonstrated more than a casual understanding of the issue, The New York Times reported.

When she appeared on talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live recently, the host asked her whether she believes in unidentified flying objects (UFO). Clinton, a noted policy wonk, quickly corrected Kimmel's improper terminology.

"You know, there's a new name," Clinton said, adding "It's unexplained aerial phenomenon. U.A.P. That's the latest nomenclature."

Her position has elated UFO enthusiasts, who have declared Clinton the first 'ET candidate'.

“Hillary has embraced this issue with an absolutely unprecedented level of interest in American politics,” said Joseph G. Buchman, who has spent decades calling for government transparency about extraterrestrials.

BEIJING: Chinese president Xi Jinping appeared in military fatigue at a military facility in Beijing on Wednesday after acquiring the title of commander in chief of the armed forces, the official Xinhua reported on Thursday.

He also ordered creation of a joint military command to prepare the forces for future wars, driven by information technology as well as risks posed in the conflict over islands in the South China Sea.

"The current situation requires battle command to be highly strategic, coordinated, timely, professional and accurate," Xi told military officers at the joint battle command center of the Central Military Commission.

The president asked officers to change their mindset in order to innovate and tackle difficulties. They should strive to make a success of a joint battle command system that was "absolutely loyal, resourceful in fighting, efficient in commanding and courageous and capable of winning wars," he said.

As general secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi already commands the highest power status in the country. The addition of a military title would make little difference to his position but send out signals about the importance of the military in the eyes of the present government.

Military analysts said coordination among different segments of the military has been regarded as a weak point in the Chinese war machine, and Xi has now set out to change the situation by taking over the joint command himself.

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton on Tuesday looked
set for solidifying their presidential front-runner status after
suffering a series of losses recently as polling began in the
potentially game-changing New York state primary.

All the
presidential hopefuls packed in back-to-back campaign stops, making
final pitches before voters ahead of the crucial primary election.
Democratic contenders Clinton and Bernie Sanders and their Republican
rivals Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich toured across the state holding
rallies and meeting voters yesterday, seeking to solidify their
positions.

At stake are 291 Democratic delegates and 95 for
Republicans. 68-year-old Clinton, the New York senator for eight years,
is leading the delegate count with 1,307, while Sanders has 1,094
delegates. The one who clinches 2,383 delegates in all wins the party's
nomination. Clinton is trying to end a seven state winning streak for
74-year-old Sanders in this primary. A total of 1,237 delegates are
needed to sew up the Republican nomination at the 2016 Republican
National Convention.

Trump, 69, leads in the total delegate
count with 743, followed by Cruz with 543 and Kasich with 144. Trump,
who has faced defeats at the hands of Cruz recently, is desperately
trying to get enough delegates to avoid a contested convention this
summer. For Trump, a win in New York would be his first since he won the
Arizona Primary on March 22. A new NBC New York/Wall Street
Journal/Marist poll shows Trump will garner 54 per cent of the
Republican primary voters. Ohio Governor Kasich is expected to come in
second, instead of Cruz. On the Democratic side, Clinton has a
double-digit lead over her competitor Vermont Senator Sanders.

However,
nationally, Republican presidential front-runner Trump has the support
of a record 40 per cent Republican voters while Clinton is engaged in a
tough contest with Sanders, according to a latest poll.

Trump
has the support of 40 per cent of the Republican primary voters and is
followed closely by Senator Cruz with 35 per cent and Ohio Governor John
Kasich with 24 per cent, according to a latest opinion poll by NBC News
and The Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, in the Democratic party,
Sanders (46.3 per cent) has all but eliminated Clinton's (47.7 per cent)
primary polling lead, it said.

While Trump would need as many votes as possible, he will not be getting two from his own family.

Since
only registered voters from participating parties may vote, Trump's
children Eric and Ivanka Trump missed the deadline to register with a
political party, making them ineligible to cast ballots for the
billionaire businessman. Clinton sought support of the minorities and
women doing her various stops across the city

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s choice of attire when she met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday invited severe criticism on social media.

Twitter users posted scathing comments on her choice of dress - a pink sari with matching shawl that covered her from head to toe.

Some users compared Swaraj’s look with other women who have met Rouhani in the past. India and the United States have agreed in principle to share military logistics, the countries' defence ministers said on Tuesday, as both sides seek to counter the growing maritime assertiveness of China. Washington has for years urged New Delhi to sign a Logistics Support Agreement that allows the two militaries to use each other's land, air and naval bases for resupplies, repair and rest.

India has had concerns that a logistics agreement would commit it to hosting U.S. troops at its bases, or draw it into a military alliance with the United States and undermine its traditional autonomy.

But after years of delays, the two sides said an agreement was in hand, although not yet ready for signing. "We have agreed in principle that all the issues are resolved," U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter told reporters in New Delhi after talks with his Indian counterpart, Manohar Parrikar.

The two sides would finalise the text of an agreement in coming weeks, Carter said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, faced with an assertive China expanding its influence in the South China Sea and into the Indian Ocean, has signalled its desire to draw closer to the United States. China is also a close ally of India's arch rival, Pakistan.
NEW YORK: Away from the furore over huge loan default in India by Vijay Mallya-led UB Group, its US-based brewery arm has secured a complex funding that it intends to repay later with a 'bridge loan' from its parent.

California-based Mendocino Brewing Company, which sells a number of beer brands, including Kingfisher in the US, has got Mallya as its chairman and is owned by UB Group through a complex shareholding structure.

In a regulatory filing with the US markets regulator SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), Mendocino has disclosed having issued a 'promissory note' to Delaware-based Catamaran Services, Inc, in the principal amount of $325,000 (over Rs 2 crore).

It further said Mendocino had earlier also issued four promissory notes to Catamaran between January 2014 and June 2015, for principal amounts of $500,000 each.

Catamaran's sole shareholder is an entity named Catamaran Holdings, Ltd, which interestingly "has directors in common with Inversiones Mirabel SA", one of the major shareholders of Mendocino.

An Indian priest abducted by gunmen in Yemen last month is safe and could be released soon, a Catholic group said on Sunday, quoting Sushma Swaraj, the external affairs minister.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil was captured from the southern Yemeni city of Aden by gunmen who killed at least 15 people at an old people’s home in an attack that was condemned by Pope Francis.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) said a delegation had met Swaraj who said the government was working to secure the priest’s safe return.

“She has assured us Father Tom is safe and negotiations are on for his release which could happen very soon,” said Father Joseph Chinnaiyan, deputy secretary of the CBCI.

Media reports last week said the priest was killed by Islamic State militants on Good Friday, although no one has claimed responsibility for last month’s attack in which gunmen killed four Indian nuns, two Yemeni female staff members, eight elderly residents and a guard.

India is looking to borrow money from the newly created Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to raise the $500m it needs to fulfil its solar power goals, The Guardian reported, quoting an Indian official. The country is the new lender's second-biggest shareholder after China. The multilateral investment bank, which was launched in January, is based out of Beijing.

“In about six months, funds could start flowing from AIIB,” said Tarun Kapur, joint secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Interest on the loan is likely to be 2%-2.5% and will be linked to Libor – a floating benchmark based on the rate at which commercial banks lend to each other – for a term of over 15 years. The AIIB will lend $10 billion - $15 billion a year for the first five or six years and could start operations in the second quarter of 2016.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the world economy is "highly vulnerable" and called for new mechanisms to protect the most vulnerable countries.

In a report on economic challenges ahead of the Shanghai meeting of finance chiefs of the powerful Group of 20 economies, the global crisis lender on Wednesday said the world growth had slowed and could be derailed by market turbulence, the oil price crash, and geopolitical conflicts.

"The global recovery has weakened further amid increasing financial turbulence and falling asset prices," the IMF said.

"Strong policy responses both at the national and multilateral levels are needed to contain risks and propel the global economy to a more prosperous path," it said.

The report, to be presented to the finance ministers and central bank chiefs of the G20 leading economies meeting in Shanghai on Friday and Saturday, said the Fund expects to lower its forecast for world growth in 2016, barely six weeks after making its most recent estimate of 3.4%.

"Global activity has slowed unexpectedly at the end of 2015, and it has weakened further in early 2016 amid falling asset prices," the report said.

How countries should react to the threats to growth will be the main agenda in the Shanghai talks. The IMF is urging countries to boost fiscal stimulus and to push through reforms in order to increase demand.

It said central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, need to keep monetary policy accommodative to be sure tighter financial conditions do not stifle the growth momentum.

India's overseas gold purchases are likely to hit a more than two-year low in February, as rising prices and hopes for a cut in import taxes keep buyers away, industry sources said.

While lower purchases by the world's second-biggest consumer could dent the current rally in global bullion prices, it would mean relief for the government which has been struggling to curb gold imports that cost the country $36 billion in 2015.

India's imports of the metal are expected to drop to 25 tonnes in February, according to a median of estimates from five industry participants, including bank dealers and traders.

That would be about 67 percent below month-ago levels and the lowest since September 2013, when arrivals were hit by a government mandate to export a fifth of all gold imports.

"Banks and trading agencies have scaled down imports. They are being forced to offer heavy discounts (to global prices) to clear inventory," said Bachhraj Bamalwa, director at All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation, pointing to weak demand.

In this Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016 aerial photo supplied by the New Zealand Defense Force, debris is scattered around damaged buildings at Muamua on Vanua Blava Island in Fiji, after Cyclone Winston tore through the island nation. Fijians were finally able to venture outside Monday after authorities lifted a curfew but much of the country remained without electricity in the wake of a ferocious cyclone that left at least six people dead and destroyed hundreds of homes.

He said officials also have fears about nearby Taveuni Island, home to about 12,000 people, because they’ve managed to have only limited contact with people there.

Winds from Cyclone Winston, which tore through the Pacific Island chain Saturday and early Sunday, reached 177 miles (285 kilometers) per hour, making it the strongest storm in Fiji’s recorded history.

Getting emergency supplies to the group’s far-flung islands and remote communities has been the Fiji government’s top priority.

Alice Clements, a spokeswoman for UNICEF, said the aerial footage coming in showed a corridor of destruction over places like Koro Island.

“The imagery is heartbreaking,” she said. “You’re looking down and expecting to see a village and instead you’re seeing a field of debris.” She said one priority is to ensure children get back to school because studies have shown it helps them recover faster emotionally.
